Ibuprofen and Naproxen they are used to treat Pain and they also used to treat back pain. But the researcher from the University of Sydney conducted a meta-analysis on 6,000 people in 35 randomized trials and concluded, NSAID like ibuprofen works no better than placebo when it is used to treat back pain.
One statistics say back pain is a leading cause of being disabled and nearly about 80% of total population in Australia suffer this problem at some point in their lives.
Opium derivatives (eg: tramadol ) are not normally prescribed by a doctor for the simple back pain. The people often chose the NSAID (eg: Naproxen and Ibuprofen ) drug class as an alternative but researcher found that they work no better than placebo, at the same time they are increasing the risk of gastrointestinal problem like ulceration and bleeding in the stomach. They found 1 in 6 people can reduce their symptom with NSAID, these findings were published in Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases.
The leader of the research team, Ferreira said we need to develop alternative therapies to treat back pain ."Back pain is the leading cause of disability worldwide and is commonly managed by prescribing medicines such as anti-inflammatories," said Ferreira.
The co-researcher said “Millions of Australians are taking drugs that not only do not work very well but are also causing harm. We need treatments that will actually provide substantial relief of these people’s symptoms,”
The nonpharmacologic therapy like exercise ,physio–therapy and chiropractic care were not evaluated by this study.Although this study make the NSAID users , more conscious about the use of NSAID like Ibuprofen for back pain purpose
