Diabetic patients should aware the use of different type of medicine that they are using with their antidiabetic therapy.There are different types of medicine that a diabetic patient can use such as the antihypertensive drug, lipid lowering agent, antiplatelet agent and so on. These all medication might continue with their antidiabetic treatment so patients should be aware of the use of these types of drug.
An adverse drug reaction and drug -drug interaction are very common when you use multiple drugs at a time .This will impact on the effectiveness of drug and sometimes alter their mechanism.Today I will discuss some major drug-drug and drug-disease interaction which a Diabetic patient should know .
Sulfonyl Urea and alcohol : The first generation sulfonylurea is Chlorpropamide may cause facial flushing reaction when it is ingested together with alcohol .
Metformin : Metformin should be always taken after the meal to overcome the gastrointestinal side effect .Metformin cause vit B12 deficiency anemia so oral or injectable Vit B12 should be used to overcome this . Procainamide, digoxin, quinidine, trimethoprim, and vancomycin which are cationic in nature and have the serious interaction with Metformin .
Thiazolidinediones:No significant drug-drug interaction has been reported for Thiazolidinediones.Although they have significant drug-disease interaction which may result in peripheral edema ,rarely pulmonary edema or heart failure .They also increase the absorption of Na ion from kidney and cause the systemic vascular resistance .
α-Glucosidase inhibitors : Acarbose and miglitol which are α-Glucosidase inhibitors reduce the absorbance of the digoxin .On the other, hand several cases has been reported which increase the metabolism of the warfarin .These group of medicine is contraindicated with the certain gastrointestinal disorder like short bowel syndrome, Crohn's disease etc .
